A Family Project — A National Treasure

How a 4th-grade homework assignment became a song sung by 50,000 students.

The Origin Story

When Steffy Boyd came home from school with a 4th-grade homework assignment, she faced a challenge that many students encounter: memorize the first 250 words of the Declaration of Independence.

The traditional approach wasn't working. Flashcards, repetition, and rote memorization left Steffy struggling to retain the words—and missing their deeper meaning.

So the Boyd family decided there had to be a better way.

Together, they wrote a sing-along that did something remarkable: it helped Steffy learn faster and understand what the words meant. By putting the Declaration's opening to music, they discovered an ancient truth—humans remember what we sing.

Steffy and Jack Boyd recorded the song when Steffy was just 11 years old. What started as a family homework solution would go on to help tens of thousands of students discover America's founding words in a way that stuck with them.
